For devoted musicians, instruments are almost like an extension of the body - but vocalists are the only ones who can truthfully say their body itself is an instrument. And what an instrument it is! There are as many unique voices as there are people in the world, so no two vocalists have exactly the same sound. What that means is simple: if you want an instrument that's like no other, your voice is it. All it takes is to learn how to unlock its potential, and that's where vocal lessons at Guitar Center come into the picture. We'll prepare you with the basic skills and knowledge you need for success, and guide you through the process of developing and fine-tuning your voice to bring out its musical potential.
Now that you have warmed up your resonating chambers, you can try singing on other vowels to continue warming up the voice. The "Aah" sound is one of the hardest to produce - but you should be able to perform this without pressure or force if you are doing all these exercises in succession. This is because we have placed major focus on exercises that keep the feeling of the voice in the face, nose and mouth.

In 2010, she performed in St. John's, Newfoundland as a participant in the Opera on the Avalon summer training program. Other operatic roles performed include Susanna (Le nozze di Fiagro, Mozart), Sister Dolcina (Suor Angelica, Puccini), Poppea (L'incoronazione di Poppea, Monteverdi), Héro (Béatrice et Bénédict, Berlioz), Mercedes (Carmen, Bizet), and Ännchen (Der Freischütz, C.M. von Weber). Also a frequent recitalist, she performed as the soprano soloist for the Hugo Wolf/Goethe Project in New York, NY for the (re:) Directions Theater Company in 2010. Other studies abroad include the Florence Voice Seminar, in Florence, Italy (2007 and 2005), and at the Carl Maria von Weber Hochschule für Musik in Dresden, Germany (2002). Ms. McMurtery holds a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College of Rider University (2006) and a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance and German from DePauw University of Greencastle, Indiana (2004).
The instruction in the Michael Daves vocal school is well thought out with each lesson building on the previous one. Not only is it a vocal school but you get to brush up on guitar skills as well. His lessons, without wasted talk, put the student right to work. The extra videos and interviews with musicians are an appreciated added bonus. Michael clearly has a grasp of what is needed to be an educator.

I love teaching Salsa because I certainly know it would bring happiness to my students. At School of Rock, we teach private singing lessons in conjunction with weekly band rehearsals meant to build confidence and teamwork. While we do offer private singing instruction, we strongly encourage students to play in band rehearsals as a way of exploring group dynamics, and get the chance to find out what it's like to sing lead vocals for a rock band.

We also offer the option for students to take piano lessons in addition to their voice lessons. Adults will find this useful because basic piano skills will enable them to accompany themselves while playing as well as with music theory and songwriting. Younger students will also find the piano lesson addition to be very valuable.  Advanced vocal technique can't fully be addressed and taught unless the voice has matured so the technical portion of the lesson in younger children is limited. By learning to play an instrument simultaneously students get the opportunity to development musicianship and musical understanding in tandem with their vocal training.  Besides, all of the modern observations about the benefits of learning music have been observed on those who were playing an instrument and reading notes....and who wouldn't want that for their child?

Correct breathing for singers begins with a spontaneous open breath.  Upon inhalation, if ones hands are placed on the stomach - an inch below belly button, the hands will be pushed out by stomach muscles.  The singer's shoulders should be relaxed and not move up.  Neck and jaw should be relaxed.  Jaw needs to be unhinged.  Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in.  This is called "singing on the breath."  The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles.  It's important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one's throat, which is vocally abusive.

This group singing class will cover vocal exercises for singers such as how to bring your voice forward into the face to improve your overall sound.
