The instruction in the Michael Daves vocal school is well thought out with each lesson building on the previous one. Not only is it a vocal school but you get to brush up on guitar skills as well. His lessons, without wasted talk, put the student right to work. The extra videos and interviews with musicians are an appreciated added bonus. We don't want you to just sing in the shower with your newly-trained voice.  All of our voice students have many options to perform in recitals and performances that we have at the school throughout the year.  Some of these performances happen right in the atrium in our own building. Students will get to perform with other students in their age group and skill level. Performances give students the opportunity to practice that final step of the music-learning curriculum by exercising the presentation of their skills in a public forum. The excitement and nerves of public performance can often derail good technique if it hasn't been properly learned and reinforced in the first place.

A description of how the vocal folds produce sound, including photos of real live vocal folds! You will learn how they come together for phonation (singing/speaking etc), and what they are doing at rest. You will also learn where they are placed in the throat. This lecture will help you understand why good vocal technique is important, and behind a sore or inflamed throat (and how to avoid it if you can!)

Voice lessons are currently being offered through the WIU Community Music School for singers of all ages, levels, and styles. Students study in a one-on-one weekly private lesson. Over the course of regular weekly study, students have the opportunity to hone their skills and realize their potential in a non-competitive environment, while receiving guidance in achieving their personal goals. In a space of self-exploration and discovery, learning skills and self-teaching techniques are instilled in order to foster life-long inquiry and passion for singing.
Many 4-year-olds love to sing, but they likely lack the focus for formal voice lessons. However, it's not too early to begin teaching your child musical concepts that will be important once they are old enough for singing instruction at School of Rock. Your 4-year-old can participate in the Little Wing music program to learn fundamental concepts through fun, dynamic musical activities.

I truly enjoyed my first lesson with Indigo. She's a wonderful instructor. She explains very clearly with a calm and precise approach. I truly feel she can teach me how to be a better guitarist in a structured, positive and comfortable way. She immediately put me at ease without judgement and without the dreaded "mansplaining" that I often got from male instructors in the past. I'm definitely coming back for more lessons.


Sam Siv publishes yet another great eBook--this time on singing! I've been musician for years with the piano and violin, and have always loved a little singing in the shower. Intonation has always been a problem though, and Siv has provided the perfect solution! His tips are helpful and give good results, and my brother is definitely happier with my singing now: at least it's not out of key.

They're climate-controlled to keep you comfortable so you can maintain focus on the lesson, and acoustically-insulated so your voice will ring true and you can easily hear your progress from session to session. At School of Rock, we teach private singing lessons in conjunction with weekly band rehearsals meant to build confidence and teamwork. While we do offer private singing instruction, we strongly encourage students to play in band rehearsals as a way of exploring group dynamics, and get the chance to find out what it's like to sing lead vocals for a rock band.
Correct breathing for singers begins with a spontaneous open breath.  Upon inhalation, if ones hands are placed on the stomach - an inch below belly button, the hands will be pushed out by stomach muscles.  The singer's shoulders should be relaxed and not move up.  Neck and jaw should be relaxed.  Jaw needs to be unhinged.  Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in.  This is called "singing on the breath."  The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles.  It's important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one's throat, which is vocally abusive.

It is very important to have daily practice so that the techniques learned in lessons are retained. Regularity is more valuable than duration, especially at the beginning of taking lessons. Practice time can range based on the level of the student from 15 minutes to 3 hours a day. Our teachers will work with students to come up and recommend a practice schedule for students.

Artist works provides an amazing format. A student can spend hours going through the curriculum and practising in a systematic way. The curriculum makes sense; it builds progressively from foundational lessons to lessons that are more elaborate. There are guests and additional material from festivals added regularly. The opportunity to converse and demonstrate one's skill level with the Musicians / teachers is invaluable. In my experience both Michael Dave's and Bryan Sutton are incredibly engaging, attentive to detail, supportive, and just generally awesome people to exchange videos with and to learn from.

Riley could not even look adults in the eye when speaking to them when Steve began teaching her at age 10. But by the time she graduated high school at 18, she had blossomed into a very powerful, skilled, and controlled singer who had starred in several school productions and won several awards and accolades such as the NJ NATS award and the NJ All-State Honors Choir.
