Trained as a classical pianist, I used to moonlight playing popular songs I heard on the radio and would hide it from my teacher. Nowadays, I ask my students what would like they to play and pick one or two songs that they like so they can practice. I don't mind if my student plays a Chopin Nocturne and then a blues/ jazz song. It's to create combination using all sides of the brain and engage students in making music.
There exists a science that dictates how a beautiful tone is produced. One of the things that can give a singer a gorgeous tone is the use of vocal resonances. These resonances (Frontal sinus, Sphenoid sinus, Maxillary sinus and Ethmoid air cells) enhance phonation in quality of tone, intensity and color. This results in a beautiful, rich and unique sound. In contrast, resonating poorly will make one's voice sound thin and ordinary. At "Beautiful Voice NJ" students spend of part of their private singing lesson learning how to resonate.
Here are a couple of basic things a singer can do to start building a bigger voice: use correct breathing method, engage vocal resonances and master singing on clean stationary vowels. There is a common misconception about how to breathe. Some believe that a singer needs to expand their ribcage out horizontally while inhaling. That is incorrect. This will result in various issues such as limited vocal range, pitch problems, a wobbly shaky vibrato and more.
As a child matures into a teenager, it becomes increasingly more important for them to get private lessons, because this is when they can realize they can pursue a career - full-time or part-time gigs - in singing. Having a well-seasoned instructor coach the teen and give him or her the right guidance and support can help make their hopes of singing for a living more practical and realistic. A good coach can refer the student to the right information and people resources.
The second half of the learning equation comes down to location. It takes a supportive environment to get great results, which is why we host our lessons in professionally-designed studio spaces. Voice lessons are currently being offered through the WIU Community Music School for singers of all ages, levels, and styles. Students study in a one-on-one weekly private lesson. Over the course of regular weekly study, students have the opportunity to hone their skills and realize their potential in a non-competitive environment, while receiving guidance in achieving their personal goals. In a space of self-exploration and discovery, learning skills and self-teaching techniques are instilled in order to foster life-long inquiry and passion for singing.
I take a physiological approach to singing... after all it is a physical endeavor. My experience in singing begins in 2005 in a youth chorus of my city in Mérida Venezuela. I started singing and vocal technique studies in that group, I sang some choral symphonies and I won prizes in my country of origin. In 2011, Ms. McMurtery performed the role of Papagena in a concert version of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with New York Lyric Opera. In 2010, she performed in St. John's, Newfoundland as a participant in the Opera on the Avalon summer training program. Other operatic roles performed include Susanna (Le nozze di Fiagro, Mozart), Sister Dolcina (Suor Angelica, Puccini), Poppea (L'incoronazione di Poppea, Monteverdi), Héro (Béatrice et Bénédict, Berlioz), Mercedes (Carmen, Bizet), and Ännchen (Der Freischütz, C.M. von Weber). Also a frequent recitalist, she performed as the soprano soloist for the Hugo Wolf/Goethe Project in New York, NY for the (re:) Directions Theater Company in 2010. Other studies abroad include the Florence Voice Seminar, in Florence, Italy (2007 and 2005), and at the Carl Maria von Weber Hochschule für Musik in Dresden, Germany (2002). Ms. McMurtery holds a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College of Rider University (2006) and a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance and German from DePauw University of Greencastle, Indiana (2004).

Students in School of Rock's Adult Program (18-years-old and up) learn scales, how to keep tempo, and how to stay on-key as well as more advanced vocal techniques like voice sustainability. Vocalists hone their skills by learning how to sing popular rock songs in private singing lessons for adults, group rehearsals, and full band sessions. With expert training from our professional vocal coaches and the support of their band, singers lead up to live performances on stage.
Many 4-year-olds love to sing, but they likely lack the focus for formal voice lessons. However, it's not too early to begin teaching your child musical concepts that will be important once they are old enough for singing instruction at School of Rock.
