My teaching approach: I tailor my lessons to fit the students goals. Beginner students want to learn songs, not theory. So I get the student playing /singing before I focus on scales and theory. I want to teach the student what they want to learn as well as giving them the skills to be a good musician/vocalist. I also determine what your learning style is, so that I can effectively teach you in the way you learn best. I have over 14 years teaching experience in guitar and voice, and I teach songwriting and ukulele as well.  I've been performing locally and internationally for over 7 years. My influences are: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Patty ... View Profile

There cannot be enough said about the importance of singing with proper vocal technique.  Our vocal instructors will teach you the proper technique of singing and how to use your singing and speaking voice in a healthy and natural way.  Voice lessons will teach you the proper breath support needed to optimize vocal potential in a way that will not damage your vocal folds.  There are so many singers who try to affect their voice in order to mimic other singers and performers.  This often causes serious damage to vocal chords particularly when the singer they were trying to copy wasn't singing correctly to begin with.  We have several things that you will find make our voice lessons unique.

Singing is a much more complex art than it first appears. It is near impossible to learn proficiently when just singing along to songs or looking at online resources. Private singing lessons will give you total attention from your vocal coach, in order for you to improve your voice quickly and effectively. Your voice teacher will also be able to see any weak points that a trainer of a choir or group class may not notice. This way, you will avoid developing bad habits that might impede your progress.
I bought this book as a last ditch effort to have a minimal competence in singing. My voice is in the bass range, which is fine for a chorus, but not much use for pop music today. I also, sang flat in my range (chest voice). My range was limited. I read the book up to about chapter 11. The business about the vowels and consonants; I did not think was useful. I put the book away for a week or so. One day I decided to try doing the boring exercises on the CD. I did it every day for 1 week. I did not notice a difference, until I tried a song that I play regularly and I was able to hit a note that I could never hit before. Also, being more aware of my breathing, I was able to show more vocal strength. Will I ever ... full review
It is very important to have daily practice so that the techniques learned in lessons are retained. Regularity is more valuable than duration, especially at the beginning of taking lessons. Practice time can range based on the level of the student from 15 minutes to 3 hours a day. Our teachers will work with students to come up and recommend a practice schedule for students.

I truly enjoyed my first lesson with Indigo. She's a wonderful instructor. She explains very clearly with a calm and precise approach. I truly feel she can teach me how to be a better guitarist in a structured, positive and comfortable way. She immediately put me at ease without judgement and without the dreaded "mansplaining" that I often got from male instructors in the past. I'm definitely coming back for more lessons.
Now that you have warmed up your resonating chambers, you can try singing on other vowels to continue warming up the voice. The "Aah" sound is one of the hardest to produce - but you should be able to perform this without pressure or force if you are doing all these exercises in succession. This is because we have placed major focus on exercises that keep the feeling of the voice in the face, nose and mouth.
Maybe you need voice lessons because you want to play the songs you hear on the radio. Maybe you need voice lessons because you want to play in a band. Or, maybe you need voice lessons because you are an adult that always wanted to play, but never had the support or opportunity. Regardless of your style, level, or goals, Freeway Music is absolutely the best place in Columbia, SC to take voice lessons. Here some things that set Freeway Music’s program apart:
Correct breathing for singers begins with a spontaneous open breath.  Upon inhalation, if ones hands are placed on the stomach - an inch below belly button, the hands will be pushed out by stomach muscles.  The singer's shoulders should be relaxed and not move up.  Neck and jaw should be relaxed.  Jaw needs to be unhinged.  Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in.  This is called "singing on the breath."  The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles.  It's important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one's throat, which is vocally abusive.

If you're new to singing, or if you're just trying to fine-tune your vocal skills, one fun and helpful exercise is to sing duet songs with your vocal instructor or a friend. Pick a style you both like and you'll find that the possibilities for both fun and music making are endless! Why Are They Helpful to Sing? When you sing with piano, or with a chorus or band, there's often someone else playing the same line you're singing. While this is great for learning to sing in tune and working on
I take a physiological approach to singing... after all it is a physical endeavor.  The voice or larynx, despite all its complexities, is just another set of muscles that can be trained to reach its fullest potential.  The method that I teach, “The Franco/Italian Bel Canto Method” has been taught in Europe for more than 200 years and has produced the world’s greatest classical singers.  Now having said that let me assure you studying this method doesn’t mean that you have to become a classical singer.  The techniques used are designed to strengthen and improve the quality of the human voice and can be applied to any genre ...
